Homegrown Tomatoes - Grandma McCormack’s Chocolate Cake a.k.a. Domestic...

One of my favorite possessions is a little cookbook my Nanny Dorothy made for me when I was 13. All of it is painstakingly handwritten by her. In the cover she wrote:

Well, I’ve always been very sentimental and this means the world to me. It’s one of those things I’d run into a burning house to try and safe if I could. It’s old and fading now, and it’s before the days of acid free papers…. so it’s also turning yellow and brittle. I wanted to save these here, not only to share, but to save for my children and other family members. I hope you enjoy these as much as I do! All my love, Angela Dawn

Grandma McCormack’s Chocolate Cake a.k.a. Domestic Economy Cake
(preheat oven to 350 F)
Combine:
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup cocoa
Mix together and pour 1 cup of boiling water over this, stirring well.
Then add:
2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
Beat until smooth.
Then add:
1/2 cup sour milk or buttermilk
1 tsp soda
2 well beaten eggs
1 tsp vanilla
Bake 25-30 minutes until the toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Frost with any icing desired.
